This is such a quick and easy way to restore a sense of calm when you are feeling agitated and all over the place. It is purifying and balancing. You will find one nostril easier to breathe through. That is normal. You will favour one or the other. Breathing in through left nostril is calming and through your right is energising bringing harmony back into your life.

Step one: Use right thumb to gently close off right nostril
Step two: Inhale slowly through left nostril
Step three: Pause for a second
Step four: Now genlty close left nostril with ring finger and lift thumb off right nostril
Step five: Exhale through your right nostril
Step six: Inhale through right nostril
Step seven: Pause
Step eight: Use thumb to close of right nostril
Step nine: Breathe out through left nostril

Benefits of alternate breathing

  1. calming – helps you step out of worry and feeling agitated
  2. re-energising – picks you up when you are feeling low and out of sorts
  3. improves sleep – great for getting to sleep as it activates your parasympathetic system which slows your whole system down
  4. improves concentration – when you are feeling dull and unable to concentrate, do a couple of rounds as this brings oxygen to your brain and improves its functioning
