why I love self-care (and you should, too)

I love self-care now that I have gotten my head around it. One thing I can tell you is that it is not being selfish. It is about caring for yourself as you do others. Why wouldn’t you want to have some of what you give others for yourself?

I do. And it is wonderful. I can assure you, you will feel so much better about yourself, your life and those around you. You are creating your very own reset button to use whenever you need to. Can you feel the excitement yet?

Let’s get your imagination creating

Imagine stepping into an aromatic warm bath with candles around you listening to gentle music. Or see yourself in your favourite spot curled up with a hot cuppa and a novel with no distractions. Oh, and here is another. Get your tastes buds drooling as you bite into your favourite food. Most probably that would be chocolate. That is mine. Or lie in the sand and feel its warmth on your skin. Divine.

How would you treat yourself?

You know, when you are so used to giving and being there for others, it is so easy to go blank when you are asked what it is you would love to do for yourself. I was so surprised when I was asked many years ago what do I do to treat myself. A massive blank. I couldn’t think of one single thing.

Now, I can’t get enough of self-care. It has changed my life around. And I had to learn the hard way, a few times no less, to bring it into my everyday life. Even now, I can still have my moments of forgetting about myself.

You become your own best friend

It is about loving yourself as much as you can. Love yourself as you love others in your life. You know that feeling when you look at someone you love and it hurts. Do that for yourself. Jeez! You want me to do what? Yes, I do.

Self-care is so important in our lives. It changes how you see yourself in life. How you fit into your life. How you lead your life. It creates self-love, self-assurance, confidence, joy and so much more. You become your own best friend who you want to spoil, love and have fun with.

Start taking note of how you speak to yourself. Listen to the words you use and the tone of voice. This will be revealing as to how to care for yourself. Do you judge others like your judge yourself? Are you overcritical? Do you put yourself down or compare yourself to others?

Practicing taking time out for yourself reconnects you to you.

It reconnects you to what you love about yourself. How you appreciate yourself and your life. This in turn creates an attitude of gratitude and abundance. You change the way you see the world and yourself in it. It brings joy and happiness in your life creating wonderful memories. And it creates a lightness of being.

To get you started, here are four easy ideas you can put into practice immediately to treat yourself:

  • Do one thing today just because it makes you happy.
  • Create a compliments list of the wonderful things people say about you and read it again and again.
  • Put on your favourite music and dance around the house in whichever way makes you feel fantastic. And yes, it will feel silly!
  • Enjoy caring for your skin with a beautiful skincare routine

And here are 4 things you can do to look after yourself:

  • Let go of what you can’t control – easier said than done
  • Don’t say yes to something, when you mean no – you only upset yourself
  • Trust your instincts – stop and take a moment when you sense you are hesitating
  • If something feels wrong, don’t do it

Your turn. Conjure up a couple of things you can add to this to make it your own self-care list. And have fun becoming your own best friend.
