Ubud, Bali. Amazing what you begin to think about when you are on holiday. As I have been quietly meditating on life, thoughts began to float through my mind about when I first started out on my entrepreneurial journey, little did I know what I didn’t know about life, let alone business. It is a whole different ball game to what you expect. And there is so much to learn in so many areas. But the biggest one is learning about yourself. Your growth is your business and your business is your growth. And this applies to anything in your life. Take a moment to see how this could translate into your life.
Choosing your business name is where it all begins in a way as it represents what solution you provide for your potential customer and what you do. As a customer, you must relate to it, otherwise, it won’t sing to you and attract you to do business with the company.
enjoying feeling alive
So, when I first started out, I was a massage and reiki practitioner. I loved the benefits these beautiful modalities could give you again and again. And that was ‘enjoying feeling alive’. Little did I know then, 20 years ago, what those three simple words would mean in the bigger picture of our lives. All I knew is that I wanted you to walk out the door feeling relaxed, full of energy, and a whole lot calmer than when you first walked in the door. Because that is how I felt when I had my own treatments.
So, what am I trying to say here? I was just recently re-reading the Buddhist’s philosophy on life and death. According to Buddha, it’s important to ponder the meaning of death. In our world, it is one of two things guaranteed in our lives, the other being taxes. Yet, many of us consider it morbid to do so. We think we are somehow willing death on each other if we discuss it.
However, how can you live your life to the fullest if you don’t consider what dying means? And from a more practical point of view how do you organise a funeral without knowing the person’s wishes. I know this from experience.
When my father died unexpected nothing had been discussed or put into place. He lived abroad with his partner and we had never discussed where would he like to be buried, i.e. back in his native country (France) or with us in ours (Australia). Whereas with my mother, we have talked about it from time to time. We know where her will is and what music she would like played at her funeral. It is all in a file in her chest of drawers.
Now I am not going to get deeper into this subject. I just wanted to touch on it to get you thinking about what does life mean for you. For me, it means not only being alive but also feeling alive. It has taken me all this time to realise the meaning of my original business name. Powerful!
How facing death brings you closer to life
And I was reminded of this again recently with my partner’s health scare. It frightened us beyond measure as we were unexpectedly faced with his mortality. In a nutshell, we were lucky he was still alive. It has taken us seven months to come out of the blur of doctors, surgeons, operations, physicians, and medications.
We are enjoying feeling and being alive now more than ever. When faced with his potential death, it made us aware of life and how we hadn’t fully lived it. Life was passing us by without us being fully present and in our lives. For me, it reminded me yet again what was still missing in my life: feeling alive. Despite living a mindful life, I was still not living it fully. I still have a lot to learn. And it is simple: to appreciate each precious moment. Because once it is gone, it is gone.
I know that is obvious. However, when did you last sit down and think about your life? Are you enjoying your life? Do you feel fulfilled? Are you pursuing your dreams? Do you believe in yourself or other people’s perception of you? What are you afraid of? Are you living how you want to live? These are all questions that come up from time to time. However, it is so easy to brush them aside as unimportant.
start feeling alive now
You know, all I can say is, don’t. Don’t brush them aside. Begin to think about your life and how you are living it. Do you enjoy feeling alive? Does life bring you all that you want?
If not, stop now and start connecting to your life and what it means for you. And make any necessary changes to lead a life full of love, joy, and happiness. You, too, can have this. However, only you can start the process of change. A choice well made, if you do.
