It takes time and lots of letting go and surrendering with trust and faith. How do you let go and surrender when you are so used to micromanaging your life to feel safe and ‘in control’?

letting go

Love these lyrics by John Denver:

Sweet, sweet surrender, live, live without care,
like a fish in the water, like a bird in the air.

These lyrics say it all, really. It is about living without care, feeling life a fish in water and a bird in the air. They feel free to go where they want to and how they want. They are free. At least from our point of view they are free.

Sit back for a moment and imagine yourself being a bird flying freely in the air. How does that feel? Where would you go? What would you be doing? How would you create your life? I often wondered what it would be like to feel unshackled from life and its responsibilities and fly wherever I felt liked: to be a free spirit. And now I do. I have become the creator of my own life.

What I realised it is all in the mind. It is about letting go and surrendering to what it is. Allowing yourself to feel confident in all that you are and in all that you do without hesitation. Without feeling beholden to your responsibilities, your old stories, and your limiting beliefs. You allow things to happen, rather than making them or forcing them to happen.  This frees your spirit to be creative in how your lead your life. There is such joy and excitement when you connect to your Spirit and true essence. And let go of all the bullshit in your life.

how your spirit freezes

When you can’t let go and surrender, you feel blocked, because you are so focussed on planning, preventing or predicting what may happen in your life. Very energy sapping and fear based. You don’t trust yourself and feel confident in being with what is. And allowing nature and the universe to take its own course. These last couple of months have been tough after a medical scare for my partner. All I wanted to do was control and hold on tightly to all that I knew – life how it had been before we got the news.

My spirit froze and my life narrowed right down. I needed at this point to micro manage my life to make sense of it all. My whole body was tight and on edge wanting to control every moment and our every move. This was the only way I felt I could survive – I reverted back to a familiar way of being. And this is what I needed to do for those couple of months. Now it is over and we are out to the woods, there is a lightness of being and no longer the need to reign our lives in so tightly. So it is time to be letting go and being that free spirit again.

the art of letting go and surrendering

The art is to learn how to stop fighting yourself and the world. Knock down the walls of resistance one brick at a time. Or if you are like me, a whole wall at a time. This will open up the natural flow of life. Yes, you need to make decisions (considered and well thought out) in your life. But once you do, let them go and allow your Spirit to also work its magic. Take action without being attached to a specific outcome. When you do this, you open yourself up to all sorts of possibilities that would never have crossed your mind.

It takes courage, faith, trust and confidence in yourself to start creating your own life and free your spirit. I saw this last year with our young grandson. As I mentioned in my blog about ‘Be excited like a child’,  he flows with unabashed curiosity. Nothing stops him. He is fearless. Everything was exciting for him. Yet, this gets lost in translation over the years.

When you let go and surrender, you come back to the wonderment, colour, beauty, joy, excitement, and pleasure of your life. Being creative in your life is uplifting and freeing. It is about being receptive and open to things, not closed off and shut down.

how to free your spirit

Things you can do connect to your spirit:

  • sit quietly in meditation and allow yourself to let go and surrender to what is (listen to this guided meditation to get you started)
  • tap on any fears, anxieties, limiting beliefs or childhood stories that come up
  • do something different in your life; it may be as simple as taking a different route to work
  • start a hobby you have been wanting to do and felt you couldn’t
  • dance around your home like no-one is watching
  • begin imagining what it would be like to be free and go for it
  • get support if need be (here are my contact details if you feel I am the right person for you)
  • and just go for it and start letting go to create your life your own way and be a free spirit

You won’t regret it. All I can tell you is that you feel stuck at first wanting to hang onto control for dear life. However, once you begin to feel that freedom that comes with letting go and surrendering, you won’t look back. Here’s to Joyful Living.

‘There comes a point in your life when you stop resisting the world and
what it wants you to be and allow yourself to be you’.
