It has taken me a long time to even be able to use the word ‘gratitude’ and ‘grateful’. It felt ingratiating to me.
healing power of gratitude
Interesting how words can have a personal meaning for you from past experience. Furthermore, you do not even really know why or how. And that is how it was for me – I had lost sight of the healing power of gratitude. Now, I love both the words using them on a daily basis.
Something I have learnt is how powerfully healing being grateful is. It connects me back to all the amazing things in life, from a smile to a beautiful flower in the garden to making a cup of tea; peeling a deliciously juicy peach to having my health and an amazing life with my partner after a dark period in my life.

How true is this? At times, I didn’t feel grateful at all as all I could see was the negativity, pain, darkness, and heaviness in my life. There seemed to be no end to it all. And all around me, it seemed like everyone else was having this amazing life. Yet, somehow and somewhere a small inner light kept shining to pull me through. Finally, I was able to connect back to the healing power of gratitude and say thank you. And it was through appreciating the really small things in my life that made me feel life was worthwhile.
When your life is so full and busy, being present and mindful gets lost. You are so focused on doing that all those precious moments are overlooked. However, when you slow down and take the time to see what is around you, you will be amazed at what is there. You will feel abundant, grateful, happy, and full to the brim with the love and joys of life.
open your eyes
When you truly open your eyes you will see that there is so much to be grateful for that you hadn’t even considered. For example, your health, eating well, being able to live a life free from danger, and already having so many niceties in life. You see beauty in the world, like a warm shower, the sun setting, precious time with loved ones, and above all appreciating yourself. With all the noise from advertising creating a deep unconscious fear within of not wanting to miss out on anything, we forget to look at what we already have. And that is often more than enough. How much more do you really need to accumulate?
Gratitude can so easily and simply be brought into our daily lives.
Being grateful enriches your life in ways you could not expect. It makes your heart sing. Over the years, I have learnt to love what I have in my life, even when I feel I am lacking. This often comes from a place of need, feeling unfulfilled and being disconnected from yourself. It is so easy to keep looking at what others have and comparing yourself to them. That is soul destroying. It creates a void in your life that will never be filled. Rather than being driven by gratitude, it is easy to become driven by greed and materialism. This trap is so easy to fall into as it is in your face each and every day.
have a gratitude journal
This is the best thing to do. You will surprise yourself at how easily you begin to fill your journal up with gratitude. It is well worth writing each day things you are grateful for. Start each sentence with I am grateful, I am thankful and/or I appreciate.
Enjoy noticing and appreciating each day’s gifts that are right there for you to cherish. Do this and see what happens to you. Take the time to listen to my Mindful Monday guided meditation on gratitude to help you open your heart and fill it with the simple pleasures in your life.
