Sometimes you stumble across a word that sings to you that is so positive and delightful. And this one did: kindfulness.

kindness and mindfulness

I wanted to know more and where did it originate from. And this is what I found. ‘When we add kindness to mindfulness we get “kindfulness.” Kindfulness is the cause of relaxation. It brings ease to the body, to the mind, and to the world. Kindfulness allows healing to happen. So don’t just be mindful, be kindful!’  Ajahn Brahm

In a world full of doing, overwhelm, busyness, negativity, this stops you in your tracks. Gets you thinking about what does this mean. It brings you into the present moment from doing into being. What I loved about seeing this was it changed my mood instantly. I was feeling frustrated with my day, that was overshadowing the goodness that was also in it. So this was just perfect. A wonderful reminder about being kind and loving in our thoughts and actions.

And it did make me feel more relaxed and at ease. It brought me back to thinking in a positive way, instead of feeling negative. I went back to feeling kind in a mindful way transforming the rest of my day. It is so easy to become mindless and judgmental when you aren’t in control of your life. This is habitual for so many of us, that more often than not we don’t even realise how negative we are being.

Take a moment now to think about your day: what have you been feeling? Irritated, frustrated, judgmental, annoyed, angry or even enraged? These emotions can be fleeting or long-lasting. More often than not you aren’t even aware of how you are feeling. Either way, they affect your health and outlook on life making you feel tense and tight in your body all the time. So much so it numbs you from the sensations of your body.

Kindfulness is good in the beginning, good in the middle,
good in the end.
Ajahn Brahm

Practising kindfulness softens you making you feel light and joyful. It lifts your spirits when you are feeling down. Kindfulness takes you out of the funk you are in. It changes your perception of life, a difficult experience you may be having or a person that is being unkind and hurtful. This state of being moves you back towards acceptance, opening you up to forgiveness and compassion. (I have added links to other blogs about these topics). And ultimately love. It brings a smile to your face. You feel the tension dissipating making your body feel wonderfully relaxed.

You begin to see beauty all around you, colour and those special moments that make your day. Your energy shifts to a higher level making your feel confident, purposeful, and joyful. Instead of resisting life, you embrace life with all that it brings you. And above all, it changes how you see yourself and those around you.

Let’s not get Pollyannaish about this either. I looked up the dictionary again to see where this word came from as I have used it all my life. It comes from a 1913 children’s book by Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna, about a young girl who tries to find something positive in every situation — a trick she calls “the Glad Game.” We are human after all and will feel unkind at times and have negative thoughts about ourselves (a lot of the time) and others. However, it is how we deal that state of mind that is important.

We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that.”
Ellen DeGeneres
