I know when I go to therapy sessions, I can be me.

This is what I love about therapy sessions.

It took me a while to get to this place as I felt uncomfortable, lost, and confused. I didn’t know what being me was like. For instance, I could vent and rage as much as I wanted to within the boundaries of decency and respect.

When I am in this space, I don’t get shut down or told off. Understanding, unbridled support and clarity without judgement are given. Most importantly, it gives me the chance to voice, articulate and clear my thoughts. Therefore, I am ultimately able to reframe them which helping me regulate how I am feeling with awareness.

In addition, I have learnt how to find the words to express how I was feeling.  That is to say I had been numb for so many years not realizing how much I was raging inside. Words were found to match my experience. This gave meaning to things when I couldn’t make sense of them, particularly after a life-changing experience.

Therapy has helped me when I was in shock after some major traumas. When the rug had been pulled from under me and life as you knew it has irrevocably changed. I was free falling into this deep abyss feeling raw, vulnerable, exposed, unsafe creating chaos and a loss of identity.

As a consequence, I no longer knew how to be and what to do. I tried to do it on my own for a while. But there comes a time where it is important to seek support. It was impossible for me to come to grips with what was happening on my own. The love and support from family and friends can only do so much. In fact, a family can implode creating more stress and anxiety.

What have the benefits been for me?

Loving myself for the beautiful woman I am
Learning to understand myself and who I really am
Finding an inner strength I never knew I had
Discovering I am not the person I thought I was
Feeling happy, free, and confident
Having the ability to say no when I don’t want to do something
Saying yes to myself without feeling guilty or selfish
No longer fearing life and the future
Life is no longer out of control
Negative thoughts and stories no longer loop all the time
No longer rehashing the story over and over
Achieving my goals
Having more fulfilling relationships
Experiencing better physical health
Being responsive rather than reactive

Having measures in place to always support myself
Being adventurous again
Able to speak my mind having found my voice
No longer feeling alone, separate from the world, lost, and confused
Feeling a lot less tentative in the things I do
Feeling confident in trying new things out
Letting go of perfectionism and allowing myself to make mistakes to learn from them
No longer feeling intense shame which dictated my life making me feel so lonely
No longer fall in a messy emotional heap
Helping me to get unstuck and unfrozen
Feeling unburdened, relieved, and released
Feeling like I belong in the world
Having a sense of peace and calm within

This is what I love about therapy sessions.

Closing words

Seeing a therapist is a life-changer. In my previous blog, I also talk about why it has helped me to give you the encouragement to seek out support. No one needs to know as the therapist is bound by confidentiality and privacy clauses with some mitigating circumstances. You don’t need to go it alone because you are not alone. Why would you not want to lead a fulfilling life full of love, joy and happiness?

In my next blog in this series, I will be talking about how a session works.

Love you to share this with anyone you think would benefit from therapy. And leave a comment with your thoughts as there is always more we can learn from each other.
