It is the end of another year. We tend to look back over the year and wonder where did it go, what did we do and what did we achieve. And we can be full of so many regrets.

How do you overcome regrets?

How do you overcome them so as not to waste any more time and energy being bogged down in the negative energy of it all?

We all have regrets in our lives. There are only one or two major ones that I have not been able to let go of fully. But they do not dominate my life like they used to. It is pointless hanging on tightly to the past as it holds us back from enjoying what we have in our lives now. We miss out on love, abundance, joy, happiness, friendships and life today when we keep holding on to what could have been or should have been.

What did I do to let them go?

I practiced these 4 simple steps which you can apply to anything and everything.

  1. name the regret: this helps us define what exactly we are regretting
  2. acknowledge the regret: this brings it into the present moment and we honour it
  3. accept the regret: it is what it is. Accepting it takes away denial, judgement and guilt
  4. let go the regret: this takes time to release the regret and not hanging on to it

You keep repeating these until you feel yourself releasing the regret. Some will disappear quickly. Others will take a while. Be patient with yourself. I have found writing helps with this. Getting the regret down on paper with any emotions attached to it helps put it all into perspective. Sitting quietly with the regret to see how does it affect your life now, also brings it to the fore. It is important to bring it into focus for you to be able to put it behind you.

Trust this gives you a helping hand to get started to release yourself from your regrets and the past.
