powerful evoking of memories

Recently I was reminded of the power of scent. It took me by surprise as I have been surrounded by scent for so many years having trained as an aromatherapist. In addition, I had developed my own natural skin care range which involved creating a delightful signature scent.

So, when I attended Soulfire Artisan‘s preliminary workshop on how to create your own perfume, I was blown away by the all the scents. Further more, it took me down memory lane. Talk about bringing you into the present moment in such a heavenly way. What a fabulous way to be transported into the exquisite world of perfumery.

I had always known that scent is a trigger for all sorts of memories. However, as I had been so focused on running the business side of my skin care brand, I had forgotten about the power of scent.

I had loved this part when I was creating my range, despite it at times being so overwhelming. Never underestimate the power of natural scents and how they affect you on all levels in positive and negative ways.

examples of memories

Here is an example. Initially inhaling Frankincense took me back to the negative side of the Catholic church. It brought back memories of being indoctrinated by my strict religious upbringing. Only now, many years, later can I inhale enjoying its power and glory appreciating its role in the church’s rituals.  I no longer hold on to the original memories.

The scent of French Lavender, reminds me of Southern France, naturally. I had the best experience whilst visiting my Grandmother in Northern France to visit Provence with all its herbal delights. Then, of course, there is rose – queen of all flowers. This scent gets to me each and every time. Because it reminds me of the large old fashion roses in my Grandmother’s front garden.

scent connects you to you

Scent is a wonderful way to reconnect to yourself. Enjoy what delights it brings into your life through perfume, flowers, and food. I have so enjoyed coming back to this wonderful part of my life again. It truly takes you on a wondrous journey.

Next time you inhale a scent, be mindful of what happens to you, what memories it may bring up, how does it make you feel and what do you really love.

The gift Kirsten Hocking, the founder of Soulfire Artisan, gave me is the experience of that again.
